What is Newsela?

Newsela is an instructional content platform that brings news articles to students at their reading level. As students start reading and taking quizzes, their progress provides feedback to Newsela on how well they understood what they read. Based on this information, Newsela adjusts the reading level for individual students. Newsela tracks each student’s progress and informs the teacher which students are on track, which students are behind and which students are ahead.

What is set-up like?

Students should download and use the Clever app to login to their Newsela Pro account. Once students are logged-in, they can search for articles and work at their own pace. The teacher can create assignments and text sets to guide the reading for their students. Many articles include a comprehension quiz and the teacher can create highlights and writing prompts.

What type of data feedback is available?

Teachers are able to get valuable feedback about the reading comprehension level of their students as they answer questions about the articles. Teachers can see scores on student assignments and monitor their progress over time.
